Writing Contest Rules:
Submit your entry via email to dj@whlaborfed.org, along with your name, age, and mailing address.
Submission must address the question: Labor Unions helping families and Communities.
Helping Families and Communities - Ages 6-13
Unions are group of workers who stand together to make life better for workers, families, and the community. When workers earn fair pay and are treated fairly, familes and communities do better too. Draw a picture of a family, school, or neighborhood. Then write about how unions help make life better for workers, families, or the community.
Helping Families and Communities - Ages 14-21
When workers have union protection such as fair pay, safe workplaces, and a voice on the job-communities benefit.
Write a response that explains how the union movement supports workers, families, schools, and the broader community.
Submission rules above. If essays, poetry or prose are written must be under 500 words.
Writer must be under 21 years of age, and a resident of Kansas (with special priority given to residents of Wichita / Hutchinson & surrounding areas)
Submission must be the writer's original work
Must be received by August 28th, 2026
Winners agree to have their work shared publicly by the Wichita Hutchinson Labor Federation, and are invited to present their work as part of the 2026 Labor Day celebrations
The Wichita Hutchinson Labor Federation Executive Board members will serve as contest judges
Previous award winners are not eligible.
