Last year 76 Kansas workers lost their lives while on the job. An additional 38,200 sustained injuries or illness at or because of their workplace. We must do better.

Please join us on April 28th as we call for tougher job safety laws as part of the 22nd annual Workers Memorial Day.

WHLF’s Annual Workers Memorial Day Dinner - April 28, 2011 07:00PM to 08:30PM

Location: In the big meeting hall of the IAM district 70 building
3830 S. Meridian Wichita, KS 67203

The event is free and open to the public. A free catered dinner from Stroud’s Fried Chicken will be provided. RSVP Here if you plan on attending.

Download a poster that you can print and hang in your union hall by clicking on the image below:

Speakers will include Joan Wagnon, Chair of Kansas Democratic Party, and other labor leaders. We will also honor the life of former State Rep. Terry McLachlan and recognize his commitment to workers rights as the posthumous recipient of our 2011 Friend of Labor Award.

April 28 was chosen as Workers Memorial Day because it is the anniversary of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the date the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSH Act) went into effect. This year is the 40th anniversary of both and the law has saved an estimated 431,000 lives since 1970. But much work remains to be done in addressing new hazards, tougher enforcement and workers’ safety rights.

Thousands of workers are retaliated against by their employers each year for raising job safety concerns or reporting injuries, fired or harassed simply because they want a safe place to work. OSHA whistle-blower and anti-retaliation provisions are too weak to provide any real protection to workers who try to exercise their legal rights.

Please join us on April 28th as we honor the fallen and recommit ourselves to the cause of workplace safety.
